Last night I met a __. He has no __.

I’ll fill in the blanks at the end of this post. In the meantime, what would you put?

I’ll be honest, I can get along with just about anyone. But there is a sub-culture in our society of people that drive me crazy. These are the people that

  1. Have no job (or job potential)
  2. Have no goals or aspiration
  3. Have no respect for themselves or anyone else
  4. Have no morals
  5. Have no direction
  6. Leech of others /Take what they didn’t earn.
  7. Are not open to the idea of being successful

I’ve posted before how I hate people that just suck off the teat of the government. And it really drives me crazy. I my entire life have worked hard. I didn’t get to the position I’m at by sitting back and letting others provide for me. I got to where I am because I got off my butt, went out into the world and decided I wanted to be someone.

But there are some people out there that have zero desire to achieve ANYTHING with their lives. I’m sure if you say the name “Zig Ziglar” to these people and they would look at you funny not knowing who or what you were talking about. But you mention Zig to any successful person and they know not only who he is, but can tell you there favorite story that he has told. Zig’s a great leader, I listen to and read his stuff on a regular basis and recommend you do to.

But the same goes for Tony Robbins, now not everyone will like the guy, but he’s famous for working with the top world leaders from all different countries. He helps people see the potential and goals they want to achieve, it’s not rocket science but it’s how he does it that is so effective.

If you want to be successful you have to do successful people things. Get up, work, achieve and have some goal in your life even if you don’t want to work on a particular day you still have enough discipline to make yourself. After all if you don’t chase your dreams  you will lose them. This world is full of handouts, but those handouts are enough to make you miserable as you never get enough to achieve “the American dream.”

The alternative to being disciplined (and ultimatly successful) is to do non-successful people things like deciding to sit at home instead of finding a job, watch trashy TV shows all afternoon, play computer video games, drink beer, complain that you don’t have the opportunities others had.  All day long…

I’m not saying I don’t play video games, when I have time I’ll turn one on but that’s AFTER my work is done, the house is cleaned, lawn is mowed,  I’ve got laundry going and nothing else is on my list to do. See there are priorities in life that I have decided are more important. (in fact I may write a post on games, I’ve got some great talking points forming in my head.)

I’ve met a lot of people I can get along with both in and outside of work, I dare say 98% of the people I meet are good people. But when I am near someone that is the complete opposite of my beliefs of working hard, achieving, etc its almost impossible that we are going to get along.

I’ have over the years gotten pretty good at sitting there and holding my thoughts in, but sometimes you see a person like this idiot it just makes you want to cringe.  And I try not to go into much detail in my posts so I won’t say everything this male (was no man, more like a boy) was doing, but it wasn’t grown up stuff. He was acting like an immature baby and if that’s how he acts when he meets people for the first time ever I hate to see what he’s like when you get to know him and hes comfortable around you.

It’s entirely possible this person can change, but after talking to him for the short period I did last night I find it hard that he would ever amount to anything. And sadly we all have the same opportunities in life, I just decided to go do something with mine, he a few years younger then me decided to not do anything.

What really scares me is this guy who doesn’t work probably fills out a tax return every year and gets some amount of money from the government (yep we paid him to do nothing), and he has power to vote (which I highly doubt he does) but the fact that he can vote for people that will allow him to get more of tax payer money is troublesome. I think EVERYONE should have a right to vote, but I think it should be like a carnival ride. Instead of being “this tall” to ride the ride, you must earn “X” amount of money to vote. Make it the standard minimum wage to be fair. But I don’t think people like this guy need to have any possibility of voting on how my money is spent as a taxpayer when he doesn’t contribute anything.

So, what would I put in those blanks from the title above? I’ve gone back and fourth between words as there are so many options, but I settled on:

Last night I met an ass. He has no future.

You should have told me…

When did our country turn into a country where we blame everyone else for our own stupid decisions? The tennessee floods have recently provided the most recent example of this “it’s your fault” mentality that has become the majority opinion around this place. And yes, I live in Nashville and am now paying for people’s failure to own up.

For starters, flood insurance. I had no idea that flood insurance didn’t cover the contents of a house, just the physical structure. But then again, I don’t own a house at the current time, I rent so I made sure that I have insurance that covers just about every scenario. The people that DO have a house should have checked on this little detail. It doesn’t seem like it would be to complicated to say “and that covers everything in my house?” when you buy the flood insurance. But people didn’t do that, and they claim their insurance companies didn’t ask them about this rider they should add on to cover their possessions… But to be honest I find it hard to believe, the reason for that is because insurance is not a non-profit industry. They are very much for profit. So the likelihood the insurance companies wouldn’t push additional policies to me just doesn’t sound right. What I think is more likly is the banks told home owners to get flood insurance, oweners did and maybe they were presented with this additional option and told it would cost $400 more a year. Most people would do the math and probably turn it down, it’s another $33 a month on top of the other policies, they figure they don’t need and if the banks don’t require it they won’t spend it.

Then the floods come. I think last I heard they called this a once every 500 year flood or some large number, so yes it’s very rare the city has seen that amount of flooding. So you get all these people that didn’t do their homework and either turned down flood insurance for their contents or didn’t ask to make sure personal belongings were covered. How are either of these scenarios my problem?

Well, now FEMA has stepped in and a report this morning said they already wrote $28 million dollars worth of checks in the last week and other families that don’t have coverage can apply for aid and get a check in as little as 72 hours. Great…… What???

See I don’t think people realize where that money is coming from. It’s not like the government is firing up the printing presses and making more money, nope they are just writing more checks which increases the national debt which is ultimatly paid for by taxpayers, you me and people in all the other states of this once great land.

So if I understand this correctly here’s the scenario.

1. A person/family bought a home.
2. If the home was in a flood area they were forced to buy insurance to protect the home, but not the contents. After all the bank doesn’t care what you own, they care what THEY own. If the home wasn’t in a flood area the home owner didn’t have to buy insurance, and from my experience buying a home in Knoxville on a large hill I WAS offered flood insurance, and yes turned it down so I know agents offer it, why wouldn’t they it’s more money for them?
3. A flood comes out of nowhere and just destroys the area, people don’t have the proper coverage because they decided the risk was to low and they didn’t want to spend that extra $33 a month. Suddenly everything they own is gone and they have no coverage.
4.  The government swoops in like a super hero to these people and starts writing checks to covers peoples losses which only occurred because those people DIDN’T DO THEIR HOMEWORK and had no clue what they needed. Hey why should they, we live in a society where we are spoon-fed information and people take no initiative of their own.
5. Federal deficit grows, all that money that was paid to homeowners is paid for by the taxpayers…

I’m not saying that mistakes don’t happen, but if you buy a house you should at least be smart enough to do some homework and ask questions. If you decided the risk for additional coverage was not high enough for you to purchase it then federal aid should be denied immediately. If you weren’t offered the coverage, you really should have asked for details before buying something you didn’t understand.

And maybe these people have a case, maybe they should have been told what insurance did and did not cover. Although I’m 100% positive had they read their policy declarations from the insurance companies they would have known what was covered, insurance companies spell it out in detail what is covered so that there isn’t open window leaving them liable for scenarios like this.

It’s like if I

  • go to the store and buy peanut butter and jelly but no bread, should the clerk be required to tell me that if I want to make a sandwich I need to add bread or is that up to me to figure out?
  • go to the gas station and put the gas pump in my gas tank but never squeeze the trigger, leave and run out of gas down the road. Should the station attendant be required to tell me I have to squeeze the handle?
  • order cable tv service at home but have no tv, should the cable company be required to tell me I need a tv to watch the cable service?
  • go fishing with no hooks, no pole, no line, no bait…. Should someone have stopped me and told me I need supplies?

And yes those examples above have little to do with flooding, but it’s a concept theory here that some people need to be told everything because they just won’t ask or are ignorant.

I heard on the news this morning that mass lawsuits are going to start hitting the courts as homeowners start suing their insurance providers for not telling them what they should have asked. This is not going to do anyone good should these people somehow win their case. Because insurance companies to recoup their loss will do what all businesses do when they lose a court battle, raise their prices. So not only do taxpayers get to pay for the FEMA money that is being spent on people that didn’t make good decisions, but now we all get to pay for higher premiums from our insurance companies because of this as well…

I’m not anti-government, let me get that straight. I’m pro-personal responsibility. We are were a nation of free thinkers. We’ve become a nation where the government WORKS for us to a government in that is like parents to us. They have to tell us everything. Government is good, it’s needed when done right, but personal responsibility is huge and these two concepts are what founded this country. We really as a people are going the wrong direction, we keep passing blame for everything that goes on and no one will step up and say “i messed up.” Was this a disaster no one could predict? Sure. But there was plenty home owners could have done to protect themselves in the ways of education, insurance, etc.

As for why the weather service had no clue, I think they predicted we would get around 5 inches or rain… We got in some areas 15+” inches of rain…. They were way off, not sure why with all the technology no one saw this, I realize once it’s above the city it’s to late for homeowners to do anything other then pack the car and get out, but that is plenty of time to save the most valuable of possessions. Or do what I do, put the most valuable stuff like copies of photographs on CD’s and store them in a fireproof/waterproof safe, and for other items like computer files use online services to store your information off site.

The bottom line is people need to be smart, ask questions and make sure you know what you are buying (or not buying.) Take ownership for your decisions or lack of decisions. Read up on topics if you need help or more information, ask questions, think critically. But don’t rely on everyone else to tell you what to do and how to do it. If that’s how you want to live then fine, but don’t make me pay for your failures.

Before handing out stimulus funds – let's make recipients pass a drug test.

March 18th, 2009

This has been passed around before, but it is still so relevant I thought I would post it again.

I work, they pay me. I pay my taxes, and the government distributes my taxes as it sees fit. In order to earn that pay check, I work on a rig site for a Fort McMurray construction project. At any time I am required to pass a random urine test, with which I have no problem. HOWEVER, what I do have a problem with is the distribution of my taxes to people who don’t have to pass a urine test. Shouldn’t one have to pass a urine test to get a welfare check because I have to pass one to earn it for them?

Understand – I have no problem with helping people get back on their feet. I do on the other hand ha ve a problem with helping someone sit on their butt, drink beer and smoke dope. Could you imagine how much money this country would save if people had to pass a urine test to get a public assistance check?

I love tax time!

I love tax time, but then again it’s because we get a refund every year. And yes I know that means we have the wrong # of dependents, etc being held out and are loaning the government money interest free for a year and that’s just fine and dandy. Really I try to change my tax exemptions but it never seems to work and we always get money back. But it’s a nice gift. And yes you don’t have to remind me it’s not a gift, it’s my overpayment of my money being returned to me.

Anyways, today I did our taxes and submitted them, saw that the IRS would accept them generally within 24-48 hours so I was ready to wait a few days before the next step. I was surprised to find out that about 3 hours later the IRS accepted them and TurboTax emailed me confirmation as wel as a notice that around Feb. 6th we should get our refund! Woohoo.

And for those of you not sure how to do your taxes, I recommend TurboTax. I used the site and it was 100% free to do the taxes and file the federal, and since I didn’t have a state income tax there was no fees at all! Plus turbo tax made it really really easy. Anyone that has a “tax guy” I would suggest attempt their own taxes this year, see how easy it is UNLESS you are in a weird situation, but even then attempt your own taxes, see if you feel comfortable and if not then go to your tax guy. But you could probably save a ton of money using the Turbo Tax walkthrough wizard, it doesn’t get any easier, and no I don’t receive any money or kick backs from them for the recommendation, the service is that good I’m doing this for free, just like my taxes were done for free! ;)

Now I did cheat a bit. No not on my taxes, that is just stupid and if you do it you are asking for trouble! See, I had every tax form EXCEPT one and the site said it wouldn’t be available until 1/31/09. Why would I want to wait another 7 days when I’m sure the form was ready now? I mean come on, everything now these days is automated and stored in databases. It probably took them a matter of hours to produce every tax form for everyone that is a customer, but they want to make it seem like it takes longer, why? who knows. The average person probably would have waited until the 31st, but I’m not that normal it turns out. :)  And no I didn’t hack or anything so calm down there you paranoid people. But I was able to work with the company to access the form early and that’s all I’m gonna say!

Anyways, taxes for 2008 done and accepted, and what a great thing living in a state with no income taxes!!!

Do I think we need a tax increase?

October 17th, 2008

I have learned that this election really isn’t about the issues. People don’t seem to care about anything except who has the best tax plan. Sure Obama had potential ties with a domestic terrorist. Sure McCain maybe can a little help from Verizon and AT&T who both erectedmobile cell towers at his ranch that in one report said was free (telecom companies showing favoritism? say it aint so.)  Sure both of them spent a trillion dollars in a week. But no one seems to care about that, they just want to know who will give them a better tax break?

My response to that is I don’t know. What I do know is that we are in an economic situation right now where we owe a ton of money to China and other foreign countries.  The Fed keeps lowering the interest rate and now I believe it’s at 1.5%, it used to be up in the 7% range so when they lowered it yeah it had an impact, it actually MEANT something. I wouldn’t be surprised if they lower it another .25%-.5% . It’s going to really be a bad day when they hit 0% and have no leverage anymore. But then again, at 1.5% how much leverage do they have currently?

The issue we have now is our government keeps lowering everything… Except spending that is.

It seems like our governments mentality is that taxes should go down,  interest rate should be reduced to increase lending. And while we are getting less money into our government let’s spend a trillion dollars to bail out our friends on wall street. I ask this to you, where exactly is that money coming from? Certainly we don’t have an abundance of money. After all we have a huge national debt. And if we did have all that extra money wouldn’t it have been a much wiser decision to spend it on fixing the broken systems of America like ohh say Social Security, a system I have paid into since I was 16 years old and working and yet will NEVER see a dime from it? And some say, there is a chance you will. Well I read yesterday they are boosting some of the handouts they are giving to help those struggling which if my math is correct means it will be depleted even faster. Guess I need to get a second job so my neighbor can continue getting her check.

I don’t think we need a tax break or cut. I say raise taxes…on certian conditions. Do I really want to give my money to the government? Not at this time. But, if the government was more fiscally responsible I would have no issue at all paying more money to live in this country and make it a better place. but it seems like the more we put in the less we get out of it.

For example, AIG was given billions on 2 occasions by the government to help bail them out. Almost immediately the company took a $400,000 break and booked a resort where they could “talk about the problems.”

Isn’t that what they have a giant building with board rooms for? And what part of “talking about the problems” require you to get thousands in Spa and massage charges? Ohh I’m sorry I guess the stress of your friends in Washington handing you billions was too much.

Then AIG asked for more money and the government gave em more. And guess what, AIG executives took a hunting trip that racked up another $100,000+ in debt.

So I ask you Mr. Government what are you going to do to punish these people? You see I have no problem paying more money to you to help better the country in which we live. I don’t believe in socialism or elitism. I believe that you get what you give in life. I’m tired of poor people that don’t go get jobs and rely on food stamps complaining that they can’t make it, no jobs are available etc. I say quit being a victim and go make something out of your life. The government needs to quit supporting these people, they need to quit giving money to the rich for bailouts and they need to start showing the working class that the money they are paying in is doing some good.

You want to know how ridiculous the government is? A few months ago my wife needed a new laptop so we did some research looking for a great deal. After a few weeks I found that Office Depot had a great tablet PC (HP brand) on sale for $600. We went down and found they only had the display model left so I asked for an additional discount, after rebates and discounts we walked out with a $900 laptop for $500. Not a bad deal. My neighbor who works for the government was issued a similar laptop recently, guess how much the government paid who by the way buys in bulk so additional discounts should be awarded to them and not have the prices jacked up! They didn’t pay $500, not even $750. Nor did they pay $900, $1500 not even close. The government instead paid $2000+ for a similar laptop to the one my wife now has and they paid 4 times what they should have paid for 1. But since they bought in bulk I would think they should have gotten it even cheaper.

And we wonder why we have debt as a nation?

Let’s see someone in Washington have the guts to talk about financial responsibility. Let’s see our tax money being spent wisely and then I don’t care to pay more taxes to help the country rebound. What we don’t need are more cuts to drive us deeper into debt UNLESS we as a nation file bankruptcy and call a “do over.” Wouldn’t that be nice?

Come to think of it, we are the strongest nation in the world. We always help other people. Why don’t we charge the countries we assist a fee? I mean we are extorting our own citizens. Isn’t that what congress, the house and the president did when they kept telling us if we didn’t pass the bailout plan we would suffer? Sounds like a mob tactic to me.

So in the end, we got the straight talk express whose priorities appear to be crooked and likes to call everyone “my friends.” And then we got Obama who presents himself very well but from what I have seen in the debates he never fully explains his answers so he really to me appears to be to Green, that meaning his stance is not known on a lot of things. Perhaps that is what we need, I don’t know, it’s up to the voters to decide. But at this time both the candidates appear to be focused on taxes and as of late “Joe the Plumber.” So I say unto you, raise my taxes if you show me what you are doing with my money. And no I am not a 6 digit income person. It sure would be nice but I manage my household , it seems like all the citizens of this country should demand the government manage their spending as well.

AIG Executives Blow $440,000 After Getting Bailout

October 7th, 2008
No Gravatar

If this news story doesn’t make you mad then you have major issues. As a tax payer we all paid $700 billion for bailout packages for wall street which aren’t working. But now to see this news story on how money is being blown is just an insult. I fully expect these executives to have to sell their homes to repay the funds and face possible jail time.  I can’t believe these people had the nerve to go on a half million dollar retreat after getting $85 billion from the government (from the tax payers).

AIG Executives Blow $440,000 After Getting Bailout

From Fox Business News

If you’d just gotten a government bailout, you might be tempted to hold a retreat at a nice California hotel — and that’s exactly what American International Group (AIG: 3.60, -0.27, -6.97%) executives did.

The committee on Oversight and Government Reform held a hearing on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. Eastern time. to address and examine downfall of AIG, the world’s largest insurance company. The committee planned to discuss the financial excesses and regulatory mistakes that led to AIG’s government bailout.

One of the items discussed was AIG’s expenditure of $440,000 for a corporate retreat at the St. Regis Monarch Beach resort in Los Angeles, Calif. These funds were spent on Sept. 22, a week after the Federal Reserve extended an $85 billion emergency loan to AIG to keep it from going bankrupt due to insurance liabilities.

According to the receipt from the St. Regis, the eight-day company retreat was a lavish one – $139,000 was spent on hotel rooms, while even more money — $147,301 — was spent on banquets. Another $23,380 was spent on undisclosed spa treatments and another $6,939 was spent on golf. A full $9,980 was spent on room service and food and cocktails at the hotel lounge.

The St. Regis Monarch Beach resort is described on its Web site as “a landmark resort of legendary proportions.”

Legendary, indeed.
