Old Faithful in Nashville? Nope, just some idiot

August 24th, 2010

I was driving home from work the other day and I saw a geyser. Now I live in Antioch which is just east of Nashville and we just don’t have geysers. I mean this thing reminded me of the time I saw Old Faithful. Water was shooting up higher then the tree line and it was an interesting sight.

The funniest thing, and I wish I had a better picture of it but there was a guy with like a hand drill standing near that truck next to it. I can’t decide if that guy was responsible for this “accident” or if he was the one that showed up first. But then again I can’t imagine why he would have a small drill to fix this huge leak…

Anyways, not one of those things you see everyday. And you can click on the picture to see it larger if you are interested. Not the highest resolution possible, it was taken from my iphone 3G as I was driving about 50mph. Surprised the picture was this good!

Stickers are complicated – Not even the register of deeds candidate got it right.

July 8th, 2010

So yesterday I’m driving down the road in Nashville to come home from work and I happened to be behind the car that is pictured here. We were stopped so I naturally read stickers on the windows and I couldn’t believe my eyes. Yes, in the picture on the right side of the window there is a sticker for someone campaigning to be the register of deeds.

Now if you don’t know what the register of deeds for a county does I’ll briefly explain. The Register of Deeds Office provides a depository for safekeeping and public inspection of all legal documents pertaining to:

  • Real Estate
  • Vital Statistics
  • Uniform Commercial Code
  • Federal Tax Liens
  • Military Discharges

So basically this person manages all the paperwork around this stuff. And it’s not trivial items, they manage filing and approving housing information, mortgages, etc. They keep up with birth certificates and Marriage certificates and a lot of other stuff people find important. Which is why when I saw this it blew me away.

Yes, this particular person who wants to be “Register of Deeds” and manage all this stuff…. Can’t even put the campaign sticker on their car correctly.. Yes they did it backwards. And I don’t believe anything gets easier then putting a sticker on a car, I could be wrong but seems simple enough. Peel and stick using common sense. And while I do not know if the owner of this car is the person campaigning for the register of deeds office I have to assume they are. Register of Deeds is not an office that you gain a lot of community support in, this car most likely either belongs to the candidate themself or someone in the candidates family, either way it’s still on backwards and they are a moron.

In this instance, political campaigning = FAIL

Oh the humanity – Nashville Flooded, where evolution has failed us.

May 3rd, 2010
No Gravatar

The last 2 days Nashville has received record high amounts of rain, my area was reported to have received 14″ have rain in 2 days. This was insane and caused a lot of damage. Entire subdivisions are underwater, roads washed away and lives forever impacted. And I find myself not so concerned for the people as I am the animals like pets, farm animals, etc that are certainly devastated by the rising flood waters.

The reason I honestly am not concerned about the people are because as humans we have evolved into logical thinkers. Some of us more then others. You see danger and your mind tells you to react properly. But some people seem to have some chemical imbalance and rather then be safe they risk their life. I believe in evolution and if you want to survive you have to be smart, you have to adapt and if you don’t you will perish, it’s as simple as that. We didn’t come all this way as a species to just sit there as flood waters rise around us. At least I didn’t. If I sense danger I’m out of there.

But then you have an idiot like this guy to the right who thought it would be just swell to get in the kayak and go boating down the road. I admit, it looks entertaining and in his case it looks like it’s safe as the water isn’t that treacherous. But bear in mind, he’s boating down a street that has never seen flooding, things can happen, flash floods can occur and suddenly you can be overtaken by risng flood water and intense rapids. It’s one of those “that looks fun” things, but my brain tells me not to do it.

And then you have people that think it’s just perfectly fine to drive through water. I’m not going to say I WON’T drive through standing water on the roadway, but I only do it as long as I can see the road through the water (in most cases) to ensure the road hasn’t collapsed underneath and the water isn’t deep or swift. By that I mean it’s standing still and it looks safe AND I’ve seen other cars cross it already. If a smaller car can cross it safely then I would have no trouble in my truck. In a worse case scenario sometimes you just have to trust your gut and do it… And that’s when the ability to think quickly and analyze the risks associated are most vital. Sadly the majority of our society don’t have the skills to analyze danger and risk, they just assume everything is always going to be just fine. In the case of this driver she wasn’t even close… And what’s worse is you can see that BMW back aways behind her and even after she was stuck they STILL attempted to go. And because of the inability to make a logical decision based on risk she got stuck and was clinging to the top of her car, which she is going to have to get totaled from the flood damage to the enginge and interior. Way to go moron.

Then you have a few college guys here in town that thought it’s be a great idea to take some inner tubes and go tubing down flooded streams. Unfortunately news reports say the tubes broke once they hit the rapids and 2 of the 3 guys are still missing. All I can wonder is where did the cooler go? And no this isn’t a picture of the guy, this is stock imagery, unfortunately these keys don’t have any pictures that I could find. But it’s just another example of the failure of a species.

Seeing sights like this makes me wonder how people survive. We’ve become so stupid as a people that it’s insane.  Most people don’t make sane choices at all. And it’s the lack of common sense that makes me not overly worried when I see a tragedy in the world, when it comes to an avoidable disasters, which all of these items I mentioned were.

In the midst of the Nashville floods there was a lot of devastation. But you can look at the bright-side, this kid was able to catcha  fish as it swam by.  When life gives you a flood, go fishing. I will say, my wife and I fish on the Percy Priest Lake all the time and haven’t caught anything lately with all of our lures, etc…. A little rain, some local area flooding and you can just pick monsters our of the water… What’s up with that? ;)

Woohoo, I'm in the most manly city in America according to the Associated Press.

March 6th, 2009

Well, my wife and I recently moved to Nashville for new jobs and today a study was released that shows Nashville is the manliest place in America! Of course if you read the criteria it is based on the # of sports teams, popularity of tools and frequency of monster truck rallies…….. WHAT????? I enjoy a game of hockey every now and then but I’m no addict to the sport. I have a lot of tools so I’m guilty in that area. And I’m just not fond of monster truck rallies……. I think that criteria is wrong.

See I think the criteria should be based on the number of men employed in each city, taking into account those where the guys are responsible and not in prison or on parole. Cities with guys that are being responsible and paying bills, taxes, voting and living the good life, to me that is manly.

Truck rallies, tools and sports are recreational that some people enjoy but don’t make the man.  I’m surprised they didn’t throw in other idiotic criteria including how much beer drank per male capita, # of broken down cars that are being “worked on” in the front yard, the size of the average TV’s that is always on a NFL game, number of guns owned, how big your cowboy hat is…… and I could go on.

I can’t believe someone actually spent money conducting this study………. And we wonder why our economy is in the crapper. Can we say “lack of priorities and focus?”

Anyways, here’s the news story sadly from the Associated Press, a once respectable news agency.

Oh, and sorry New York and Los Angeles, guess you got to many metrosexuals in your ranks cause “y’all aren’t manly at all” according to the AP and the results of this study.

Tivo + Comcast + Cable Cards = A great experience!

February 8th, 2009
No Gravatar

So you are probably wondering what the title is about. I’m not sure, but it has something to do with the fact that when we moved Knoxville where we had Knology cable service to Nashville where we had to get Comcast we went ahead and did the HD package mainly because Comcast threw it in free and really gave me trouble trying to get the non-HD package. So I went ahead and got it along with Comcast’s HD box. Everything went well, the service was up and running and I am very amazed at how well HD looks, I never really thought there could be that much of a difference, but there is! The only issue was that I had comcast HD box and my standard Series 2 Tivo wouldn’t record HD shows. I knew this ahead of time but thought I would give comcasts DVR a chance. After seeing how the HD box behaved and the menus I soon realized how much I missed Tivo. I went ahead and got on Tivo’s site and ordered a refurbished HD Tivo at about $100 savings over regular cost. I then went down the same day to my local comcast office and picked up a multi stream cable card just so that when my tivo arrived I would be ready to pop the card in, and based upon the thousands of messages from upset comcasts customers I would have all sorts of issues getting my cable card to work, why not everyone else did that has an HD box, cable card and comcast.

So, literally 2 days later the Tivo arrived, yes they shipped it VERY fast even though I did the standard ground. I hooked the tivo up like it recommends, did the install without the cable card to test it and let it download program data. Once it was done I stuck the multi stream cable card in and immediatly the tivo saw it as an S-card like it said it would and within a few seconds it switched over to an M-card. Woohoo. The tivo then showed me a lot of ID #’s and told me to call my local cable company to get the card activated, it even showed me the phone number of the local comcast office! How cool is that!

So I called comcast and they didn’t ask me for the host ID or anything and just sent a signal to my cable card and said “that should do it.” It didn’t. I thought to myself “here it goes.” I then scheduled an appointment for a tech to come out and to my surprise they set up an appointment for the very next day! So that night I kept playing with the Tivo and calling comcast and they kept sending signals to the card and it never would work. Finally I gave up, the next day the Comcast Tech arrived and he came in and immediatly told me he wasn’t sure how to get it working but he knew someone that would. So he first startred by checking all signal strengths to ensure everything was good, he then called the “guru” in the nashville office and gave him the host id’s as well as a few other things and within a matter of minutes my cable card was activated, it took about 15 minutes for all channels to be found, but they did start appearing and working, even the HD, HBO and HD HBO!

The tech then told me the signal strength was below what it should be and he would send a DM out to do something to the pole outside but in the meantime he hooked up an amplifier to my line and boost the signal. He then gave me his cellphone number and told me to call him next weekend to let him know if my channels look better without the amp and if it does he would come by to pick it along with my old HD box up and that I shouldn’t call Comcast because if I do a new tech will be dispatched and we’ll have to start over, that he would be more then happy to help me next weekend if I needed it.

I will say that a few years ago I was with Comcast and the service sucked. It took weeks to get a tech on site, it took forever to get through on the phones and it was miserable. I must say that I am impressed. Within 24 hours I had a tech onsite, and my cable card was active and working. I didn’t have anywhere near the horror stories I had read about when I decided to go the HD Tivo with Cable card route with comcast. So, I am very impressed and glad to see that over the past few years they have changed the way they operate. The tech even told me that he in the past worked with some guys who would tell of all the nasty things they said to customers, and over the years Comcast fired them all and hired on new people and retrained everyone. It really is a relief, at this point I am 100% happy with my comcast service and techs.

I hope that this service level is everywhere and NOT just in the Nashville area. Good job comcast!

Adventures in moving in a Penske Truck = 2 wreckers + 2 mechanics

February 2nd, 2009
No Gravatar

I will start by saying I am very impressed with the service that we received from Penske Truck Rental. That is key because with what I am about to tell you is a very rare tale of how well a company can treat a customer.

On Friday January 30th my father in law and myself went to Penske to rent a 26 foot moving truck to move my wife and my stuff from our Knoxville TN residence to our new Whites Creek residence. We got the truck with no issues, added my father in law as a driver, got the damage insurance (you’ll understand why later), a few moving blankets and a “smart cart” a.k.a. appliance dolly.

We brought the truck back and started loading it up around 9:00am. We loaded and loaded and loaded some more and finally filled the truck around 6:30pm. We then got on the road and drove about an hour out of knoxville and stopped in Cooksville for a bite to eat, by this point it was around 7:30. We went in, ate and around 8:00 we went out and got back in the truck ready to leave. Turned the key and the truck wouldn’t start. My father in law who is a truck mechanic looked at the engine while I called the Penske repair number. Penske dispatched a road service mechanic to our location and said they would be there within an hour, so we waited in the truck. The guys from J & K Truck Repair showed up and after tinkering with the truck and called in an error code and diagnosed the problem as a faulty CAM sensor. I being a tech have no idea what that is. Regardless the guy then took the sensor and went back to his shop to see if he had a spare. We went into Hardees to wait while he was gone, after all it was very cold outside, snowing cold. While sitting my phone rang and it was penske telling me that the mechanic didn’t have the part. Oh the picture here was of the first repair man. Yes I said FIRST.

Anyways, so I’m on the phone and Penske offers to tow us and the truck fully loaded to our final destination about 150 miles away, back the truck to our door and allow us to unload. I thought “YES!” so we did that. This of course meant waiting about another hour for the wrecker to arrive. It neared 10:00pm at this point, I know because Hardees closed at 10pm and we were kicked out into the cold. The wrecker finally arrived around 10:30pm, hooked the truck up, my father-in-law and I climbed into the cab and off we went.

We arrived in Whites Creek, I have no idea what time it was, probably 1:00am, and the driver of the wrecker was faced with a HUGE challenge. His truck was around 35 feet or so, the Penske truck was around 30 feet which meant this driver had to back the truck up and turn it on a 2 lane road, into a driveway the width of a car and a half wide, without driving off the side of the road into a large ditch. I didn’t think he could have done it, but he did after a number of attempts…. Then the problem hit. He backed the truck up about 15 feet into the driveway and then had to stop because his wrecker was huge and would have hit the overhead power lines. At this point the driver said he would leave the truck where it was on the bottom of the driveway, leave the drive train (or whatever) disconnected and we put blocks under the wheels to prevent it from rolling. The wrecker then called for a smaller wrecker to come and push the truck up the hill.

At this point we were waiting for the smaller wrecker, it was probably around 3:00 before he arrived and was in a nice shiney truck, didn’t look like he had ever used it for any work.  He pulled up and asked what we needed and I said “we need the truck pushed up the hill and he responded by saying “that’s all?” To which I thought “Great!”. Well he got out of the truck, looked around and said I can do it…… Then he got back in the truck, backed in and stopped… Oh this isn’t good. He then said “I can’t do it, if I scratch the paint I’ll get in trouble.” He was talking about the many trees that lined the driveway. At this point I was a bit angry, after all I waited a long time for this guy to show up and then tell me “sorry.” He left, wouldn’t hook up the drive train (or whatever) so that we could activate the emergency brake and go ahead and unload the truck because remember at this point it was secured with wood blocks and the slightest movement could have sent it rolling down the hill. But he just left, no help at all.

At this point I called Penske back and explained the problem and up until this point was very happy with the service Penske offerd. I mean I paid about $300 for the truck, they paid to have it towed over 120 miles which I know cost them over that, not to mention the other wreckers fees, etc. So I was happy with all they did without even being asked. So now I call and talk to the people and ask them “what am I supposed to do? I can’t move the truck, it doesn’t work. I can’t unload the truck, it isn’t secured and has no brakes. I can’t leave the house and go to a hotel, the truck is blocking the driveway, I can’t get clothes or an air mattress from the truck cause I’m afraid it will start rolling.” The lady on the phone put me on hold, sounded concerned so I waited. A few minutes later she got back on the phone and said a guy wanted to talk to me, so I said ok.

Then the foot went into the mouth and Penske screwed up. The guy said “we said we would tow the truck to your destination and we did that.” With attitude he said that. I had to explain to him that yeah maybe it was near the destination but I agreed to it being put into my driveway so I could unload it, at the current state it was not secure, it was blocking the entrance and exit and was still broken. He then smarted off saying “Penske isn’t responsible for trees, so we had no control over that last wrecker, and furthermore we won’t push a truck that heavy, loaded up a hill, we don’t do that.” To which I asked “why then did your company have me wait out in the cold over an hour for a wrecker to arrive for a service you don’t offer?” His response was “I don’t know.” I then explained the situation again and he offered to have the wrecker come back, and pull the truck out of the driveway and go park it on a side street a few miles away so we could get in and out of the driveway. Sure this doesn’t solve the issue of unloading it. And then I asked him if Penske would insure everything that was in the truck because it was a rural area and I wasn’t about to allow them to go park everything I own a few miles away in a back country area where anything could happen to it. They of course refused to insure everything.

Finally the guy took his foot out of his mouth and said he could call a local guy that normally has the part to come out and fix the truck, I thought “well theres a dandy idea.” So I agreed and about an hour later another mechanic arrived, took the engine cam sensor out said he didn’t have the part, (oh great) but started tinkering with the truck and found that a fuse was loose. He put it back in and said “I’ve seen this before on this model truck.” He then got into the truck, turned the key and it started. The guy then re-attached the drive train (or whatever) and asked if I wanted him to back the truck up the driveway to which I jumped with joy and said “Yes!!!”

Now, I am impressed with Penske overall. I know they paid a lot of money to have the 2 wreckers and 2 mechanics come out. I do hope that the first mechanic who mis-diagnosed the problem first off didn’t get paid, and second off is no longer a penske mechnic. I mean if he noticed the fuse he would have saved Penske a ton of money. But he misdiagnosed it, and that caused Penske to take a lot of radical actions to make the situation right with the customer. Next, I want this ass of a manager who was the last guy I talked to who jumped into the problem that I started having the night before, and he decided around 3:00am when he just arrived at work to become involved and been an ass without considering what I’ve been through, I think that guy needs to be out a job. If it wasn’t for that one guy at Penske I would have zero complaints. Because Penske was a top notch company up until that point. They couldn’t control the truck breaking down, they couldn’t control the misdiagnostic from the first mechanic, but they could control their employee.  He dropped the ball and that will make me hesitant to rent from Penske again, if it wasn’t for him I would say 100% without a doubt choose Penske over Uhaul or the other truck rental companies.

In the end, we finally got moved in. It was an adventure and I do think next time I will gladly pay a company to move us rather then load, drive and unload and face these issues. But I was glad Penske overall stepped up and handled the situation, yeah we hit a donkey in part of it, but even the donkey came to his senses and got the issue resolved. It is a relief to see companies still have customer service like this, It sure has been a long time since I was just amazed with service, especially when you consider how much of a loss they took on this whole thing.

Oh hey, fun fact! When we dropped the truck off we had to fill it with gas, mind you it was generally a 3 hour drive, around 220 miles total trip. We actually only drove around 60 miles (most of which was in our driveway!) and used 5 gallons of diesel! Guess that is one way to save gas, just have the dang thing towed everywhere!!!

It's almost moving day!

January 24th, 2009
No Gravatar

Well, on this coming Friday my wife and I will be moving our “stuff” from our house in Knoxville to our house in White’s Creek. We are both very excited as it is a brand new start, and we are both looking forward to doing things a bit differently this time, and with both of us in new jobs it really is a fresh start.

The house is a traditional style brick house, but is really huge and features a lodge style sun room on the back, I mean you wouldn’t expect to see this when you walk in the front door, but you go out the dining room through the french doors and you feel like you are in a cabin.

A few features we really like about the house is the huge hot tub in the lodge room (how could you not?), the 1.5 acres approx of wooded land behind the house, sure it’s a hill but we have been told there is a clearing near the top that misty envisions setting up a tent and camping at some point. Probably the best thing, is the country and not being in a city. Having more room to work, garage to park both our cars in, plus a huge room we are planning on turning into a guest room so we have room for friends and family that are passing through! Plus the fact it’s literally 8 miles from Nashville means it’s very easy and convenient to get to.

So, this coming Friday is when we’ll start moving in!
