The fraud that is the computer salesman on one of TV's home shopping channels

April 18th, 2010

So this morning I was flipping through the TV and came across a channel where they were selling a “great deal you can only get here.” And I listened knowing I wasn’t going to buy one, but just to see what they were selling. It’s good when you are in the industry to know what’s being offered and the prices it’s going for. So for me it’s just to stay current even though I won’t buy one.

As I listened I couldn’t believe my ears.First they were selling a laptop with a 15.6″ screen, the system looked decent and for the most part they were truthful. But when one person asked about battery life the response wasn’t “you are expected to get X number of hours of battery.” Instead the response was “it’s a 6cell battery so  you’ll get hours upon hours of battery.” Well, to the average consumer that means nothing, how many hours will 6 cells provide? Or does the average consumer not care? And is it “hours upon hours” as long as you turn the wifi off, dim the screen, disable the CD and external peripherals? No details.

And the reason the battery thing irritates me is because some computer makes say they can run for hours, but that’s only if you optimize the system and turn everything off…. And I just got an iPad it was sold as having a 10 hour battery, they make that clear. I use the thing constantly and get way more then 10 hours out of it and that’s with full wifi, watching movies, listening to music, surfing the web, etc. So truth in battery life is important, a company that won’t say what is expected is questionable. After all, would you want a laptop if you can’t use it on the go because the battery won’t last more then the time it takes to boot the system up?

Then the kicker that made me question the integrity of the tv salesman who happens to be a regular on this particular channel. He mentioned it came with a 2gb SD card loaded with software that would ordinarly cost you $300 to buy seperatly but they are including it FREE!!! Great deal when the laptop is only $699 and getting $300 in software free. But hang on, pay close attention because they aren’t really fraudulent, but more deceitful. If you listen closely they tell you all the titles and after the ones that would cost the most they add the word “trial” to it and skips right on by that. So yeah you are getting an SD card loaded with software, but 90% of it is TRIAL software that expires in 60 days. It’s the same software you could download directly from a particular website free of charge and get the same 60 day trial.

So for this tv personality to try to sell the consumer that they are getting $300 worth of software free is just a load of dung. They are getting a 2gb SD card which retails for about $8 at most electronic stores loaded with trial ware that if you install you’ll regret because it will constantly ask you to buy it, when you remove it most won’t remove completely. It’s a mess.

And then they put that product away and switch to a netbook and explain how it’s the 4th generation and it’s now got the new style keyboard where each button is it’s own…. Ironically it looks identical to the MAC keyboard I’ve been using for a long time…. This isn’t new technology, they used the same layout as Mac… I guess that’s why Mac has the slogan “think different.” Because they are truly on the edge of new technology and everyone else always copies them….

Then as I listen more about this netbook they get excited because it has built in wifi, and a built in webcam as if this was new technology to netbooks… Let me explain briefly why this annoys me. Because netbooks are designed for one thing and one thing only. To get on the internet. Hence the word “net” in the title. So built in wifi exists in ALL netbooks, that’s sort of what makes them a netbook. And as for built in webcam, nothing special, I haven’t seen a netbook without a built in webcam……

I know that these people need to sell computers, but they could do it in a way that isn’t misleading to the everyday consumer. The prices are competitive, there are some reasons to buy what they have over others and if they would simply focus on those points instead of being deceitful and making it sound like on this channel, this is the only place you can get a laptop with trial software but do it in a way it sounds like your getting the full version included or a netbook with standard hardware then they could really be good. But after watching and hearing this I can’t believe it and this particular channel has lost all credibility to me when it comes to them selling products.

MSNBC – The "faux news" company where they lie to you and push their agenda… Opps you got caught!

Watch this clip and listen to the commentary. Listen closely…

Ok, now, look at the image below FROM msnbc.com that was taken on 8/26/2009 ( http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32492783/ns/us_news-life/)

guns

Do you see the problem? MSNBC in the VIDEO cropped the shot so much you couldn’t see if the gun carrying person was white or black and from the commentary they made it sound like it was a white racist as the lady said “this may have a racial overtone and you have a man of color in the presidency and white people showing up with guns” and turned the entire conversation into how this was about racism. And the black guy on the news is talking about how there is “anger over a black man being president” and then goes on to say how people are angry “we see these hate groups rising up and this is definitely part of that” and yada yada yada. Such a load of crap in this story.

What they don’t tell you is that the gun carrying person with the handgun strapped to his side is actually a black man… In fact to save themselves you can see in the image the same shot taken from their website, only not cropped. How the hell can a news organization crop footage and spin the story to say that this guy is a white radical who is a racist, carrying a gun near obama and then say that they expect someone will try to harm the president because he is black.

I am DEEPLY disappointed in MSNBC. I used to visit MSNBC all the time but with this type of faux reporting and making up the news to push the agenda in the direction they want it to go I can’t trust them anymore.  And Fox News isn’t any better but this is just outright wrong and is enough for me to say I won’t be watching anymore news from MSNBC, and in fact the entire MSN universe is pretty much irrelevant at this point when it comes to news. And since MSN is owned by Microsoft,……. Well lets just say I’ll stick with Apple for my computers, The consumerist, Daily show and Colbert Report for my TV news and Armstrong and Getty Radio/podcast for my daytime news.

As if there weren’t enough problems in this country we don’t need news organizations creating false stories and lying to the nation. I think everyone in this story should be fired and a huge apology be made for their inaccurate reporting. And I don’t want that to be because they are forced into it by some upper management. No, I want them to lose their job because of the fact viewers are no longer watching their news channel and their ratings are plummeting. This is how the free market works. If we want the government to lead us they can fine them or whatever, but if we want our country to be as strong as it can be we have to let the people speak and utilize the free market model. Rewards the companies that do good, and stop doing business with those that are frauds. Do this and they will shut down.

If you want to see a good story about this exact same situation? Here’s local news from ABC

Some of Palin's remarks stretch the truth

October 3rd, 2008

Not to appear “biased” I’ll post some of Palin’s questionable statements during the VP debate. Regardless, According to one count Biden lied 14 times, Palin only made a few mistakes.

Daily News staff and wire report

(09/04/08 01:48:20)

Gov. Sarah Palin’s remarks to the Republican National Convention about her record in state government stretched the truth.

GAS PIPELINE

PALIN: “I fought to bring about the largest private-sector infrastructure project in North American history. And when that deal was struck, we began a nearly forty billion dollar natural gas pipeline to help lead America to energy independence. That pipeline, when the last section is laid and its valves are opened, will lead America one step farther away from dependence on dangerous foreign powers that do not have our interests at heart. THE FACTS: Palin implies that construction has begun on a major natural gas pipeline from the top of Alaska into Canada. That is not correct.

In fact, no building has begun and actual construction is years away, if it ever happens. This summer the Alaska Legislature, at Palin’s request, passed a bill under which the state will issue a “license” to a Canadian energy company, TransCanada Corp., and pay it up to $500 million as an incentive to someday build this enormous project, which Alaska politicians have long sought with little success. The license is not a construction contract, and federal energy regulators have not yet approved the project.

Palin also puts the price tag for the project at $40 billion, an exaggeration. This is roughly $10 billion more than most cost estimates industry players and consultants have made to date.

EARMARKS

PALIN: “I have protected the taxpayers by vetoing wasteful spending … and championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. I told the Congress ‘thanks but no thanks’ for that Bridge to Nowhere.” THE FACTS: As mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired a lobbyist and traveled to Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million.

In her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation, although she has cut, by more than half, the amount the state sought from Washington this year. While Palin notes she rejected plans to build a $398 million bridge from Ketchikan to Gravina Island, that opposition came only after the plan was ridiculed nationally as a “bridge to nowhere.”
