Stickers are complicated – Not even the register of deeds candidate got it right.

So yesterday I’m driving down the road in Nashville to come home from work and I happened to be behind the car that is pictured here. We were stopped so I naturally read stickers on the windows and I couldn’t believe my eyes. Yes, in the picture on the right side of the window there is a sticker for someone campaigning to be the register of deeds.

Now if you don’t know what the register of deeds for a county does I’ll briefly explain. The Register of Deeds Office provides a depository for safekeeping and public inspection of all legal documents pertaining to:

  • Real Estate
  • Vital Statistics
  • Uniform Commercial Code
  • Federal Tax Liens
  • Military Discharges

So basically this person manages all the paperwork around this stuff. And it’s not trivial items, they manage filing and approving housing information, mortgages, etc. They keep up with birth certificates and Marriage certificates and a lot of other stuff people find important. Which is why when I saw this it blew me away.

Yes, this particular person who wants to be “Register of Deeds” and manage all this stuff…. Can’t even put the campaign sticker on their car correctly.. Yes they did it backwards. And I don’t believe anything gets easier then putting a sticker on a car, I could be wrong but seems simple enough. Peel and stick using common sense. And while I do not know if the owner of this car is the person campaigning for the register of deeds office I have to assume they are. Register of Deeds is not an office that you gain a lot of community support in, this car most likely either belongs to the candidate themself or someone in the candidates family, either way it’s still on backwards and they are a moron.

In this instance, political campaigning = FAIL

This is easy, one thing is NOT related to the other… Get it?

April 22nd, 2009

I do computer support. And one thing that has driven me crazy since day one is how people group problems together. Let me explain clearly to you all the difference in cause/effect and relationships that do and do not exist. Now you may think this will get complex, it’s not. In fact it’s so easy it really annoys me that people can’t comprehend this basic concept.

See when you get an email and it’s from a total stranger and it has an .exe file attached to it and you open it then later you have a virus on your system, you have demonstrated cause and effect.

If you are installing a piece of hardware in a computer, and after the install your speakers don’t work, it could be related. But the next question asked is this. Did the speakers work before the hardware was installed? If the answer is no then they weren’t, THEN THE HARDWARE DIDN’T BREAK IT!

See people like to say that because a tech touched something suddenly it’s their fault things aren’t working. They don’t take into consideration the fact that the one thing didn’t work prior to the tech doing anything.

Now, if the speakers worked prior to the visit, then the tech installed something and now they don’t, perhaps the tech is at fault. But 99% of the time, this isn’t the case. And it’s a pain in the butt when people tie two things together that have nothing to do with each other.

I mean it’s like me punching you in the head and you saying that hurt. That my friend is cause and effect. Now if I throw a spoon at you and it starts raining, those are not related. But in some people’s twisted, short circuited minds they can’t tell the difference. These people must have been dropped on their heads numerous times in a row throughout their lives.

So please, before you go out and blame someone or get a job where it’s your job to make judgements that will impact project timelines or the businesses success that you know what the hell you are talking about prior to opening your mouth.

And if you are wondering no I didn’t break anyone’s speakers, this is simply a generic, vague rant based upon a particular experience that may or may not be true.

The truth about declining home prices in America…

March 13th, 2009
No Gravatar

I know, you are reading the title and asking yourself “what the heck does this guy know about home prices?” And to that I reply with….. Nothing…..  except I have a house I am trying to sell, and the rest is common sense.

I keep hearing people on the financial shows I listen to saying how they are upside down in their homes, they are worth less then what they are currently in debt for and they just want to walk away, take a foreclosure, etc. These people aren’t broke, they just are upset that “life happened” and now they are in a situation. But it’s all fake…. Not really, but let me explain what I mean before you have an aneurysm.

See when we all went out and got our mortgages we got them based upon current home values, and we all they they were great deals. If we didn’t we wouldn’t have gotten the mortgage. After all, why sign up for a bad trip? You don’t. So now that you have a mortgage that was approved and financed for the original price, and now the estimated home value has decreased a bit, no problem right? Well if you were smart and didn’t finance 100% using an idiotic 80/20 loan or were really an ignoramus and did an ARM loan then you are probably really upside down. But if you put down a decent down payment you have some equity you can play with. But given the fact most of the people “in trouble” and “needing bail-outs” didn’t do this the smart way they financed 100% of the value and probably got an ARM as well and now may be really upside down….

But you know what? The decreasing home value still means nothing to you…… UNLESS YOU WANT TO SELL!!! Or unless you got an ARM and planned to refinance later down the road. If that’s the case, you made a gamble, while I got a fixed rate and am safe you got an ARM and are now paying the price. So not my fault you made a bad bet. And the fact you got an ARM doesn’t impact the house prices going down at all just your ability to refi it. And that’s your own bad decision in which you attempted to save a few bucks up front. Ever heard the expression “the cheap comes out expensive.” So that’s the end of you ARM people, that was your own bad move.

Anyways, that’s right, most of the people bitching about the value of homes going down nothing has changed except maybe their ARM adjusting. They still are employed, they still are making the payment (in most cases) and they have no intention of selling. They are just annoyed that the value is less then they owe. But like I said, it doesn’t make a difference unless

1. you have a home equity loan (dumb idea to begin with) or
2 .you plan to sell.
3. you have an ARM but we don’t care about you  people as mentioned above.

So, excuse me if I get irritated when I hear people complaining that their upside down in their house. What drives me crazy is that not one of these financial experts is asking this question, “are you planning on selling your home in the next ____ months??” Because if the answer is NO, then what is occurring has zero impact in the owners life.

Now, fast forward to my situation where I lost my job and relocated for a new job and had to sell, the value of homes is impacting my life. But you know what? I’m not going to quit paying my loan because the value isn’t what I want. I signed a contract, I have a moral and legal responsibility to repay the loan per the agreed terms. I did my homework and made sure we got a fixed rate loan even though they pushed ARMS at really great interest rates. We put money down even though they told us to do the 80/20 scenario and finance the whole thing and avoid PMI. Want to know why? Cause we planned on a worse case scenario of interest rates going up, losing a job and not being able to afford the loan. And you want to know where I learned this little bit of wisdom? Not from some mountain top guru, not from a little green man that says “rise interest rates will.” I learned it by reading “buying a home for dummies.” Yep, a book I bought for like $10 taught me enough about this experience.

Meanwhile, other idiots didn’t do any homework and went out and found a home worth way more then they can afford, but the mortgage company told them they could afford it. DANGER DANGER!! This is like going to an insurance salesman asking if you need insurance. What the heck do you think they are going to say, no? Of course they are going to push what makes them the most money, and what is good for them is bad for you, the consumer. But people decided to get trained on home buying from the very people that are selling them the product they are buying, the mortgage.

And now these same people are too dumb to realize that a decrease in home values means NOTHING for them unless they are intending on selling the house in the very near future, or unless they signed up for an ARM or an 80/20 and now are struggling because they are house poor.

So, in a long summary. If you plan on living in your house indefinitely the housing prices in america at this time don’t matter to you. And if you are under retirement age your 401(k) doesn’t matter either. Sure prices may be plunging but it doesn’t matter unless you need the money out of it! So, when you sell then yes be worried about the home prices, but know that home prices will go back up in the near future. And don’t stress about the value of your 401(k) if you are years away from retiring. Instead of panicking why don’t you start investing as much as you can! This is the time in America that will make millionaires. Those that act smart now will be rewarded greatly in the long run. Those that blame others, don’t do homework before huge purchases, can’t think for themselves, and can’t understand simple economics are the ones that are going to lose. Sure these are the people that are getting our tax money in the form of a bail out and tax credits, etc now which sucks since its our money. But trust me, you can’t fix stupid no matter how much money you throw at it. Unfortunately our government hasn’t learned this yet, but then again these aren’t the most ethical people in the world that are heading up our society. I mean come on, people that are telling us we may need tax increases to pay for the economy, yet a lot of the people Obama has tried to put in his cabinet have been investigated and found to have not paid their own taxes for years! And regulators whose job it is to protect us for the last several years have allowed these ponzi scams to be run in the financial sector. I mean, why do these people even have jobs? Obviously they aren’t effective at what they do? I demand we at least se indictments, jail time and prosecution for the CEO’s of the failing companies, CNBC or other “financial shows” that didn’t investigate before reporting, etc.

I’m getting side tracked, so I will stop now.

I've been educated!

October 2nd, 2008
No Gravatar

Well, it’s finally over….. Well almost. Still have 4 days left of classes but I went through the commencement ceremony and received my bachelors of science in business management from the University of Phoenix (UOP) at the Memphis TN campus.

I will say this…. Why is it you go through 4 years of school to get an education and earn a degree and then they make you wear a square, cardboard hat and make you feel like an idiot? I went through hundreds of hours of work to wear a piece of square cardboard, yep I’ve achieved a lot. ;) I sure wish they would do away with those. But regardless, I did it and did have a good time. All I can say is FINALLY I am done! (+4 days) and will not wear any more square hats! Woohooo.

Thanks to all my family who were able to attend and sent me congratulation cards. Very much appreciated. And a huge thank you to my parents who without this never would have happened!

Want to play a game with customer disservice reps?

September 10th, 2008
No Gravatar

I for the last few weeks have been playing an epic of a game of skill and patience and thought I would share this new adventure with the world….. Or at least those poor souls that read this.

The game consists by calling up the customer service department of an alarm company. Not just any alarm company the one that protects my house. The game didn’t start by be wanting to prank the company, no it started when they billed me more then double what my monthly cost should have been 3 months in a row.

After the first month I called and they apologized and were going to fix it. Next month, double charged again and no credit on my account. So where did this money go? Oh wait until month 3! Double charged again. At this point the alarm company has $95 of my money extra from these double charges.

Now the game comes into play where I as the consumer try to get back my money that the alarm company stole. I really should patent this because it is a great game to play with any company.

What you do is you call the company up and be polite to begin with. After all, starting out an A$$ will get you nowhere quick. So you start by saying “I’m calling to check on the status of a refund owed to me.” And the person on the other side says “what?” Then you go through the script with them explaining what happened and how you were owed a refund. At this point the moron on the other end of the phone says that they don’t see where you were going to get a check but a credit on the account.

So you say, a credit what’s wrong with that?

To which I reply, everything. I want proof that there is a credit, and hey these idiots stole $95 from me and I want it back!

So you complain you want a check and they finally agree but say it will take 10-15 business days to get the refund to you. So I say “fine” and I wait the 15 days.

On day 16 I call up and ask “where’s my money?” to which they reply, “What? I show you have a credit and a check was never sent.”

Can you feel the frustration mounting?

So you then roll the dice and ask to speak to a supervisor as you understand that the person on the phone can’t issue a check or expedite the request.

At this point you listen to wonderful on hold music which I think is supposed to calm you down, after all isn’t that why they play elevator music when you are on hold with a customer service department? Is it wrong that when I hear Kenny G I want to kick an oompa loompa until his orange face turns blue? So by the time the “next level” gets on the phone you are more irritated then when you started, plus you’ve had about 15 minutes to practice your blurb.

So then the manager gets on the phone and you say “I assume you have gone over my notes and know what is going on?” to which they reply, “yes I see we owe you a refund of $95. Is that correct?” And you say “Yes it is, I want a check and I was promised one 3 weeks ago.”

After much complaining the manager then tells you he will get the accounting department to cut a check the next day and then mail it out, but it will take 10-15 business days to receive it.”

“Whaaaaatttttt?” I say. I in my kindest, most irritated tone explain how I’ve already waited and don’t want to wait anymore. They have 2 business days to get the money into my account no matter how they have to do it.”

“Ok” the manager says. He then mumbles and finally says “can I get your checking account number and I’ll have them deposit it into your account? Or perhaps they can overnight it, whichever method is fastest.”

“Great!” I thought to myself, progress. So I give the guy my info and he says he will call me the next day. Well since this is a game at this point you take a card and it says “lose a turn.”

I will say at this point it’s important to not let up and don’t give the guy on the phone a chance to talk. It’s important that as a customer you control the situation so the guy has a chance to go through his flip chart of how to handle an upset customer. After all, when he reads his chart and you finally start to ease off he feels like he worked the situation and made you calm down. You need to validate this shallow idiots abilities and give him confidence in himself even though you know he is totally incapable of delivering anything he says.

The next day comes and no phone call arrives. At this point it’s Friday night. So you let it go over the weekend thinking, maybe he will call. But nope.

So then Monday you call back and go through the script again with a new person who apologizes and appears sympathetic. I tell you some of these people answering the phones need to be actors cause they area really good. Sorry, I digress.

Then the lady on the phone puts you on hold, talks to the supervisor who I talked to on Thursday and she gets back and says “the supervisor said that the accounting office was closed on Friday, so he’ll take it to them tomorrow to be processed and you’ll have your check by wednesday.”

If you have any logic you would think, we’ll today is monday…..Was the accounting department not open today either? Yeah right, it was closed Monday and Friday and it wasn’t even a holiday weekend! Sign me up for a job in that company will ya?

In reality the moron just forgot to do it, then he didn’t have the guts to tell me he forgot. Imagine that, a customer service call center manager without a backbone…. Go on.

So I play the idiot caller again and act like I believe them, after all they act like they care so we all are just full of a lot of crap at this point.

Wednesday comes and wednesday night approaches and no check, no phone call not even a single luxury. Did I go to far? Perhaps. So I call back up and get to speak to a brand new moron on the phone. This guy couldn’t get it clear that they owed me money and kept trying to find out if the check I sent them cleared………. what?????

Eventually the one brain cell he has became available and was able to process my phone call. He finally got it straight and told me he would email the accounting department who doesn’t talk to the public directly (gee I wonder why.) And that they would call me tomorrow.

“What?” I thought the accounting department didn’t call customers directly. At this point you can pretty much ad lib your way through, tell them you are unhappy…….tell them you are very upset…….tell them you want a free month of service or two…….oh yeah throw in cancelling your account and getting a lawer invovled cause they just love that. Then set a deadline.

So, with that being said the game will continue on Thursday. I am supposed to have a phone call from one of the reps by 8:00pm EST at which point if you believe what I said “I’ll cancel my account and file complaints with every organization I can find.”

Oh yeah, he did say “this is an isolated incident.” to which I replied “I am not so sure, I would imagine if it were you all would take it a little more seriously.” Oh yeah then throw in a few shots like “how can you protect my home if you can’t even figure out how to send me a refund and get my billing right?”

I used to get so worked up with these things. But to be honest, I’m really having a great time playing the game with them.

Oh and if you want to know who the alarm company is, It’s Monitronics. Never heard of them huh? Well there is reason for it. They seemed really good at first, but now that we have been a customer just over a year, the service has gone downhill drastically. I understand that a computer glich caused my bill to be wrong. It happens, but the trouble I am having getting a refund is really just outrageous.

Radio Shack employees are useless.

August 31st, 2008

Anyone that is following the life of my beautiful wife and myself know that this year we are going all out for Halloween and Christmas. In doing so we have bought a Light-o-rama 16 channel light controller and have been playing with it over the last several days. In fact tonight I was sitting outside working on syncing up various songs to lights for our Halloween light show. Well, yesterday we decided that we wanted to sync some of the lights to music rather then just slow fades on and offs. But at the same time we don’t want speakers out front blaring music irritating our neighbors. They already think we are crazy I’m sure so let’s not irritate them anymore. Anyways, I digress. So now that we decided we want music I have been looking for an FM transmitter. Now at this point I would like to say that I am a proud, licensed amateur radio operator. My call is KD5IIL, I’ve been licensed for many, many years and took tests given by the FCC proving I know a think or two about broadcast laws. Not to mention a little research over the last few days. I know what I want, I am looking for a “Whole House FM Transmitter.” This item transmits approx 150 ft, within the legal limits of 200 ft for a non-licensed FM station. So while the wife and I were at the Mall getting our Sbarro Pizza to go (had to twist her arm for it ;) ) we stopped by a Radio Shack and asked the idiot working if they had FM Transmitters. I mentioned I want to broadcast to Radios, a range of about 150 feet. The clueless associate then said “That’s illegal without a license.” I pointed out that no, it wasn’t. That 150ft was well within the FCC laws (never mentioned my FCC license) and he said “oh, ok.” He then walked over to the clearance table and I kid you not said “Well you can buy this piece of crap, get it home be unhappy and bring it back, or you can buy this iPod fm transmitter.” I asked if either could be used with AC power (home not  auto) and he said no, in fact they carry no AC FM transmitters.

Now, the fact the don’t carry what I want isn’t an issue. The fact he pointed out iPod transmitters not a problem since he didn’t really know what I wanted. But the fact he first tried to tell me the FCC laws and was totally incorrect and second the fact that he pointed to some items and called them “crap” sort of made me wonder in my head if everything they sold was crap?

So we left empty handed.

A long time ago I was upset with how radio shack treated the employees. Many years ago their corporate office did lay offs in a very tasteless manner. They emailed those that were losing their jobs to let them know via email they were fired. I originally thought that was tasteless but now that I see the quality of the employees I don’t blame them. And I know that this was one employee but Radio Shack hired him and he represents their company. Perhaps they need to go through some training sessions with their employees, or perhaps they shouldn’t offer advice on topics of which they do not know. I’m sure it’s not often they get the kind of question I had and I’m sure most the times the customer isn’t a license amatur radio operator with a bit of insight to the FCC but that makes it even worse. If I didn’t know better I would give up on my search and not be able to accomplish what I want because I would think it was “illegal.”

The good news is I know what I want, I know where I can get it and I’ll be ordering it Monday. I’ve also learned that the Radio Shack employees are 100% useless.

Oil Change and dumb drivers

July 19th, 2008
No Gravatar

This evening I stopped to get my oil changed on the way home. After all my truck has been telling me for weeks it was time so I thought, “why not?” Well, while sitting in my truck I began to wonder, has anyone ever “missed” when driving into the oil change place? They have that hole in the floor and I could just see someone falling right into it. So I did what anyone would do. I got home and googled it and sure enough found a video. Check out this moron.
