Dude you got a dell…Aww crap….

June 30th, 2010

I worked for Goody’s Family Clothing for an 8 year span that ended in January of 2009 when the company laid everyone off and filed for bankruptcy. But we were a HUGE dell shop to say the least. Our data center might as well have been sponsored by Dell, our desktop PC’s and laptops were all dell’s, the store servers we were running were actually Dell GX260 and Dell GX270 optiplex desktops. It wasn’t unusual to walk the halls of the corporate office and see Dell cardboard boxes everywhere from the latest shipment of PC’s to come in.

And I know many people that have or had Dell’s as a personal computer at home, I know I used to.

But while at Goody’s we had a strange issue come up and it took some battles with Dell to get them to repair the systems across the company.

At first it wasn’t an issue as we had one optiplex system fail about every week or two. We would open the call and Dell would come out and put a new board in for us and the system would get back up.

Well we started seeing a high failure rate and eventually got someone at Dell to say that we may have bad capacitors on our boards. In fact one of our directions was to go to each computer if I recall correctly and look at the capacitors on the motherboard to see if they were swollen, a sure fire sign the board was about to die.

Eventually Dell did replace the motherboards in the systems across the company, but this was years ago.  Today I came across an article that explains how Dell knew that the optiplex models had bad hardware and that Dell was knowingly replacing bad hardware, with bad hardware!!

Want to know the really funny thing here? At one point, 1,000 computers that Dell delivered to the law firm that was defending it in the suit started failing, and the computer maker allegedly “balked” at fixing them!!

Really? Not only do your computers fail, but you send FAULTY computers to the law firm defending you in your case regarding selling faulty computers? I can’t even make this stuff up. No wonder Dell is tanking. Below is a view of the companies stock over the last 10 years. Notice, once upon a time the were a great company, but the span in which these faulty computers were sold was between 2003-2005 which as you can see in the chart is the point the company was rebounding a bit… Then came the year where the issues starting occuring and the company steadily tanked.

I could add a witty comment here on how dell sold crap which they knew was crap (according to the new documents) but I won’t, I think the collapse of dell is inevitable. Now that this report and new documents have come out Dell who is already struggling is going to have one heck of a time trying to come back after this revelation.

The best article I came across was regarding this was written by the NY Times, however for me to post the article on my blog they wanted me to pay $1,260!! Umm, I don’t think so. So instead of linking to them directly I’ll link to a number of other sources where you can read up on this. I linked directly to the article so clicking the url below will take you straight to it.

I felt like I was doing the publishers clearing house contest tonight!

Well the bankruptcy papers arrived a week ago from Goody’s Family Clothing and I have delayed filling them out due to my own ignorance of the legal system. It’s funny you go to school and learn about the three branches of the government, you learn about the justice system but the one thing they don’t teach you is how to fill out a legal claims form. I realize this event doesn’t happen to most people, but then again I never get stopped on the street and asked what the three branches of government are called. So I did what anyone would do, I called my dad who is a lawyer and said “help!!” The consensus was fill out the pink and yellow forms. Basically fill them all out and let the lawyers for Goody’s figure out which one is necessary. Besides, it seems silly to file a claim for money from a company that not only went bankrupt but is non-existent. I hear there are still remnants of the company left but honestly I couldn’t care less what happens to that company at this point. Lots of great experience came from my 7 years at Goody’s. But then with good came bad including layoffs like clock-work. I worked with some fantastic people and some that could only be described as bottom dweller scum suckers. Lots of those critical life lessons you hear about. All experiences I truly value, but definitely time to move on.

Anyways, so I filled out the forms, stuffed them in the envelopes put stamps on them and with any luck someone will be sending me a check!! Should I wait by the door? Perhaps Mr. Dabaah who was one that I feel is one of the most responsible for the failure of the company will come to my house with balloons and a giant check. Wouldn’t that be a sight?

You might ask why I am even filing a claim? Because Goody’s was in violation of the WARN act for the 500+ people they laid off on January 12th by not giving any of us notice. When a company fails to provide notice that they are shutting down, etc they are in violation of the WARN act and from what I understand are liable to provide up to 60 days pay. With any luck that should be a nice extra chunk of change. But in all honesty, I don’t expect anything to come from this. After all the company has so many creditors they owe money to and my claim is nothing compared to the millions they owe Levi and the other big brands.

Interesting fact, Goody’s has screwed over so many vendors using a number of “names” they operated under. My favorite has got to be “SYDOOG” Yep, they had a company named GOODYS backwards.

How many times can you kill a company?

April 11th, 2009

So I’m reading the news this morning and I see an article that is titled “Potential buyers emerge for Goody’s Family Clothing.” Now I thought to myself that I must be reading an old article. After all the company fired 500+ corporate workers on January 12th, shut down every store by February 29th 2009 and reportedly shut down the office yesterday. Goody’s has already been sold numerous times and every time it got progressively worse. But reading the article it sounds like someone might buy the name just to keep it from opening under that name in the future. Other parts of the article point to small investors perhaps coming in and reopening stores under the Goody’s name. which leads me to my question of, just how many times can you kill a company?

In all honesty I don’t care what happens to “Goody’s” at this point as I have long moved on to a bigger, better and actually profitable company. I had a great 7 year run with them but the last 2 of those 7 years sucked as it was constant flux of problems, bankruptcies, lies and deceit from the top level management. So many employees were screwed by the final owners of Goody’s (Isaac Dabaac and Michael Zimmerman) and I can’t imagine anyone with any sense going right on back for another round of abuse. Sure things good be different but the likelihood of that in my opinion is slim. On the flip side however, there are still a lot of unemployed IT people from the former company and if this is in fact true then if reopened they will be able to get one heck of a support staff.  If I were in their shoes, the only way I would even consider going back is if Goodfriend came back in, bought the name and reopenend back under his leadership, but then again, he did in essence “sell” all the employees when he turned and left so there is definitely mixed emotions on that front. He sold it once, why wouldn’t he sell it again? And I know nothing about what’s going on so I have no idea if Goodfriend is even a possibility. But ever since he sold it the feelings were he was going to let it tank, then come back in and buy it back for pennies on the dollar. If that’s true it’s smart on his part to make a ton of money, but at the same time he gambled with thousands of lives of the employees plus the name and reputation of the company has been devastated. So I hope it isn’t true.

So just how many times can you kill a company?

The parade of boxes, and the ending of an era.

January 3rd, 2009

No one really knows the fate of Goody’s Family Clothing at this time. Sure if you listen to the news there is a lot of speculation of our demise is coming. They were very quick to pick up on the story when the company stopped selling gift cards and tuxedos. The odd thing is internally there is a deathly silence. Is it the end? I can’t say. Will we be able to live on? Anything is possible, but just how probably is the question.

I sure hope that Goody’s can hang on. I’ve grown up in the ranks of Goody’s and the business has truly taught me a lot. I remember starting at Goody’s about 7 years ago, I was unloading trucks in a remote distribution center that has since been shut down. Throughout the years I held a myriad of positions and titles and hoped that the path would continue… But based upon the news reports and the ignoramuses that work(ed) for the company it seems like the end may be drawing near.

Recently one ignoramus employee decided it would be wise to fax a copy of our companies internal website to a local news channel. Not sure if they thought it would be helpful to let people know what was going on or not. But they didn’t think it through, they just did it. In actuality what happened is it appears to be speeding up the process of potential a potential shut down. Not because it was imminent, but because it created mass panic and no one wants to buy clothes from a company that may not be around to honor returns, etc.

Just the other day I was sitting at work and I saw people carrying out boxes of their personal belongings. The parade of boxes has officially begun. And the sad thing is no one really knows what is happening. Is Mr. Goodfriend going to come back and save the company? Is the current CEO arranging some sort of finacial deal to carry the company onward? No one except the CEO and CFO really know. Sure there is speculation, but it is merely that.

So, I don’t know what is going to happen. A lot of people ask me and honestly I hope Goody’s can stay afloat. The company ever since we emerged from bankruptcy I felt was doing one heck of a job. We were robbed and raided by some individuals that came in for a brief run of power and then left with the money and that seriously appeared to hurt us. Then after working on a come back and doing a decent job at it the economy turned and that really may be the downfall.

Is there finger pointing going on? Oh sure. I could name names of people that are being blamed for what people are speculating may happen, but honestly what good will that do?

Goody’s hires approx 500 people in the home office and about 10,000 people is what was reported work in the companies stores. If the company were to shut down it really would be a terrible time, and the ending of an important era in my life time.

But the sun will still rise, the earth will still spin and time will move on. Its important that no matter what happens people get back to their daily activities. As for me, I’m hoping for the best, planning for the worse and just watching the events unfold to see what will be. After all, I’ve given all I can and the events that may or may not occur really are not under any of my control.

So, my house is for sale and I might have to sell my truck but it’s a chance to start over. After all, how many times do you really get a “do over?” I think everyone I talk to has told me that they wish they could make different decisions, but we never do because we are all comfortable with where we are. It’s not until you start to hit the bottom that people take actions and control of their life and make the changes they want to see.

With that being said, here’s some great quotes. I love quotes, they get right to the point and everyone can learn something from them.

“I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is to try to please everyone.” Bill Cosby

“Our greatest glory is not in never falling but in rising every time we fall.” Confucius

“A successful person is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks that others throw at him.” David Brinkley

For those of you following the company I work for a new development has been made regarding our bankruptcy and restructuring plan.

Court approves Goody’s Clothing reorganization plan
October 08, 2008 (USA)

Goody’s Family Clothing Inc a moderately priced family apparel retailer operating in small to midsize markets primarily throughout the Southeast, announced that the Company’s Second Amended Plan of Reorganization (the “Plan”) has been confirmed by the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.

The confirmed Plan, which will facilitate the Company’s formal emergence from Chapter 11, is expected to become effective in approximately 10 days.

Paul White, Goody’s Chief Executive Officer, stated, “Goody’s has a solid 55-year heritage and our Company has made great progress over the past few months.

In particular, we have created a stronger and more nimble organization that is more effectively positioned to serve our very loyal customers.

Decision will allow us to move our business forward with renewed vigour and we look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead.”

Goody’s commenced its Chapter 11 case on June 9, 2008. The Company has continued to operate under the supervision of the Bankruptcy Court throughout the Chapter 11 process.
