Finally, a company releases a prepaid MyFi! But it's a little late…

You may remember my infamous post I wrote back in April 2010 where I was complaining about the idiocracy behind Sprint’s customer policy where even if you bring your own device you MUST sign a 2 year commitment. Yes, even though you aren’t getting a phone at a reduced cost (because you already owned it) Sprint will still require you to be in a commitment and pay early termination fee’s should you decide to leave… I callit infamous because I had the CEO’s office calling me trying to explain the policy, but  it still makes NO sense. You can find that post here (http://www.jeremy11.com/?p=1320).

Well the main rant I had was because I had bought a MyFi device so I could get my wifi iPad online anywhere without having to upgrade to the 3G model. After Sprint rejected me and I couldn’t find any prepaid solutions that would work I decided to sell the wifi ipad and buy a 3G ipad and have been loving it ever since. But that doesn’t mean I have forgotten about Sprint and their stupid policies.

So, with that being said I wanted to let you know that Virgin Mobile has just released a prepaid MyFi which is exactly what I waslooking for. The Myfi through Virgin will cost you about $150 for the device which is similar to the cost of the Sprint or Verizon model and run you anywhere from $10 for a few days of service to $60 for 5GB a month… Wait a minute, that 5GB plan is the same price as sprint and without a contract! So yes, why would you sign up with Sprint with a 2 year contract when you can get the same exact plan contract free? If you would like to learn more about Virgin Mobile’s plan here’s a link to the MyFi page on Virgin’s site. -> http://www.virginmobileusa.com/phones/mobile-broadband-2200.html

But why in my title do I say it’s a little late? Well if Virgin offered this at the time of iPad launch I would have gone this route. But they didn’t, so I had to change my plan. I now have the 3G ipad which is great. The cool thing about it, and everyone is always saying “get the wifi and use a myfi to get it online, then you can hook up 5 devices to it as well and get them all online.”

Well I recently jailbroke my iPhone 3G mainly because I wanted multi-tasking and apple left us 3G owners in the dust when they only released multi-tasking to the 3GS and 4 owners. I can say first hand after being afraid to jailbreak for the first year and a half I had the phone for fear of bricking it, I found my fears to be unfounded. The jailbreak of my 3G iphone took literally 15 minutes and all I had to do was push a button and the system did the rest. I now can multi-task and it makes the 3G phone so much better! Yes at times the phone gets REALLY slow, but generally that’s because I forget I have a lot of programs running in the background. When I remember to close a program after I’m done with it the performance doesn’t get impacted much at all.

Anyways, once I jailbroke my iPhone and saw how easy it was I pondered the idea to jailbreak my iPad. Now I won’t say I did this, it’s all “theory only” of course. But technically once the ipad is jailbroke I would be able to install the MyWi application on it (not to be confused with the hardware MyFi I mentioned earlier) and now can use the 3G ipad as a MyFi device and connect multiple device to it and share it’s 3G connection without having to pay for a MyFi service plan which costs about $60 for 5GB, reminder yes you are paying for the iPad plan and if you signed up early you have “unlimited data” but it’s only $30, half the price of a MyFi 5GB limited plan and the iPad has a  much larger battery which can last many more hours then a myfi! Once again, I’m not saying I’m doing this but it is technically possible.

So if you don’t want to jailbreak this new Virgin MyFi is the way to go, I highly support companies that work to offer Good service and not lock customers into contracts with no way out other then paying expensive early termination fees.

Apple… Will you PLEASE ship my iPad already?!?!?

Apple, listen…. I know you are pretty busy with the whole Magical iPad thing… I get it, I had a wifi one, it was the coolest gadget I’ve ever played with… And then I decided I wanted the 3G model so I sold my wifi one with hopes I could get my hands on a 3G one locally but to no avail. So I ordered one from your website and it’s been 7 days and finally yesterday it changed to say “Prepared for Shipment”…. I logged in and checked my order about a dozen times since yesterday waiting and hoping to see the status go to “SHIPPED” but it’s still “prepared for shipment…” Yes I realize checking my order a dozen times doesn’t make it ship faster but I’m like a kid in a candy store.

So I ask you Apple, will you PLEASE SHIP IT ALREADY!!! I mailed my old wifi one out on monday so it’s been 4 days since I’ve got to play with the magical iPad and I’m going through iPad separation anxiety!! ;)

To iPad? or not to iPad?, that is the question.

It’s no secret I drool when I see shiny new objects created by Apple. They have such great products that are so intuitive. Yeah other companies eventually make products that are like apple’s, but they aren’t that creative on their own. Apple really has some cool technology and innovations. So when I saw the official announcement of the iPad I like many others was reading the twitter messages of the keynote written by those at the event. When I finally saw the device in pictures and videos I wanted one… Bad…. In fact I still do, and since it came out this morning I question why I don’t have one.

See my problems why I won’t commit yet are the following.

1. iBooks – this is the book store app written by Apple to purchase books to read on the ipad. The problem is, they don’t have a similar app for the iPhone, at least not yet. So if you read a book on the iPad and later are out and have some time to kill you can’t fire up the iPhone and continue where you left off, it isn’t going to happen, at least not on the iPhone yet. What kills me is that Amazon does have the Kindle app for both iPad and iPhone along with your computer. So you can start a book on one of those and finish it on the other device! It truly brings reading a book to you anywhere you are at. I can’t imagine why Apple is limiting iBooks to the iPad. If I got an iPad I’ll most likely be using the kindle app over the iBooks app until apple changes their ways here.

2. App cross platform – this goes with my #1 issue with iBooks. I don’t like there are apps for the ipad and apps for the iphone. I understand some cases there needs to be, but it seems like the same apps should work on both devices, after all the iPad really is a big iPod/iPhone. So when Netflix released their app for the iPad on day 1 I was a little irritated along with the rest of the iPhone community. Why would netflix ONLY be available on the iPad when the iPhone is just as capable? I mean I watch videos on my phone all the time, in fact the iphone was sold as a great mobile video device.  I am happy to read today on the netflix blog that Netflix officially announced they are going to release an app for the iPhone which only makes sense. But I’m still not sure about the other apps, I’ve bought many games and would hate to have to repurchase all my apps to be displayed on the ipad. I’ve already spent enough on those apps, buying “HD” versions just isn’t going to happen, I’d rather get new apps if that’s the case.

3. Do I want wifi or 3G? I really don’t know what model I would want. The wifi or 3G if I did get one. I’d love the ability to have internet everywhere, but I already have an iphone that does that. I’d like to have a way to download books anywhere I was at, but realisticly I don’t need that with wifi available almost everywhere.  And the 3G model is going to cost an extra $150+ not to mention the monthly 3G fee. Ultimately, I don’t think 3G is worth it.

4. Anything the iPad can do my iPhone can do – the only real benefit to the iPad is it’s a larger screen, but everything it can do my iphone can already do. I can surf the web, get my email and even read a book, although I have to use Kindle to read books because apple doesn’t support iphones in the book store. But that’s not a problem since kindle allows me to resume my book on any computer I’m at and right now an iPad book can only be read on the iPad.

So there ya have it. Will I have an iPad? Probably, one day. Just not today. Now that being said, if any of the readers of my blog want to send me one I’d be happy to use it and write a new review after I’ve used it. :) But for now my iPhone is just fine, and while the iPad has a better battery life then the iPhone, I have 2 external batteries for my phone, one case battery and one that plugs in via usb so I have all the battery I really need.

I’m really curious what types of iPad apps are going to come out. This initial year will really define the device and if it is the true portable device the worlds been waiting for.

Now my only problem will be to keep my childish “i want it” mentality under control when I see the iPad’s in the store. While I can convince myself I don’t need one when I don’t have one, and they aren’t near me I have no idea if that same attitude will be able to be kept under control when I’m standing face to screen with the ipad. :) I will admit, this morning I went to Best Buy to “play” with an iPad but sadly I found my local best buy isn’t carrying them! Yep they had the display counter out but no ipads on it and none in stock, the employee said I had to visit the other store about 40 minutes away, so I left empty handed, came home had pizza and watched a hockey game instead. It was close though! I’m sure if they had them in stock I would have gotten one.

"We don't ship junk."

During my graduation trip to Memphis I talked to my sister who was interested in a new computer and she asked me why should she get a Mac over a PC? I responded with what I felt were a lot of great reasons, but Steve Jobs really sums it all up in the following video.  I thought I would post it for anyone else that was curious or under the belief that mac’s are way more expensive then PC’s.  They really are not unless you get a stripped down PC.

This site looks best with

Everyone, I have had some comments on “how the site looks”. Some have been good some not so good. I will say that this site is BEST viewed with Apple SAFARI browser. The next option is Firefox from . Both of these are `00% free and can be downloaded on the internet. This site DOES NOT SUPPORT Internet explorer. It may work but it isn’t going to look 100% correct, trust me. So, if you haven’t already I recommend downloading Apple Safari browser from http://www.apple.com/safari/ or Mozilla Firefox from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/. Both of these browsers will work on Windows XP and above. So why switch? Well both browsers are written by people other then Microsoft, so they just work better! :) Also, Apple Safari (my favorite) loads pages much faster then internet explorer. There is a lot less complexity in the browser so it doesn’t have to do so much on every internet site. It is far superior then Microsofts Internet Explorer. Try it, you will love it.
